Taking chances

Een kleine kans (Against the Odds) has been made into a movie. Its Dutch title is Patatje Oorlog; abroad it has been released as Taking Chances.
The movie has gained the European Children Film Association Award for Best European Film at the Malmö BUFF Filmfestival.
Award ceremonies take place at several European Youth Filmfestivals (Giffoni, Cine-Jeune, Berlinale, etc.) where the jury singles out the best European Film in the running.
BUFF, the International Children and Young People’s Film Festival, was founded in Malmö in 1984 and is generally considered one of Europe's leading festivals for movies for young people.

The concomitant catalogue (The Best Dutch Book Designs 2011) will be published on the same occasion. By way of follow-up there will be a number of expositions both in Holland and abroad.

White Ravens

The Internationale Jugendbibliothek (Youth Library) of Munich annually compiles a set of children's books called the White Ravens. Specialists single out the books which they consider worthy of wider public attention. These are then exhibited at the Bologna Book Fair.
I was pleased to learn that Zwaan laat het waaien (Swan makes the Wind Blow) has been included in this year's selection of White Ravens.

Winter was exceptionally severe in Laugarvatn. Gales battered the farmhouse until it shook and snow was piling up against the walls, but not for a moment did I regret my visit. Indoors everything was comfy and I never failed to find inspiration outside. I found myself in an overwhelming snowscape. And to top it all there was the Aurora Borealis. Such a bonus!
Alda and Kristveig proved to be the ideal hostesses for me, providing companionship when I desired it and leaving me in peace when work needed to be done. Two women that I admire and found it difficult to take leave of. They have kind husbands and children to boot, which made saying goodbye even harder. Gullkistan is the ideal workplace, I dare-say. If you don’t mind icy conditions, you will find quiet and well-heated accommodation there.
I was working on a book situated in Iceland. I am expecting to finish it in a few months.

In the next couple of weeks I will be staying in Gullkistan.
